“Our envy always lasts longer than the happiness of those we envy.” ~ François de La Rochefoucauld
Do you think that others have it better than you do?
Do you struggle to be happy for those who succeed – especially when it’s someone you think is undeserving?
Just when you start to feel satisfied with what you have, does your mind wander the earth looking for something to need?
If you struggle with envy, you’re not alone.
Because we are inherently social beings, we naturally compare ourselves to others. And when we do, we will always find someone who is faring better than we are.
But unchecked, envy can become a deadly force in our lives. How do we navigate away from these dangerous waters?
1. Practice contentment
Contentment is not a popular word in our day because society is ruled by advertising. But it’s essential if you want to overcome envy. Contentment doesn’t mean complacency. Contentment is feeling gratitude for all you have right now. It keeps you from overvaluing what you desire and undervaluing what you have.
2. Practice generosity
Generosity doesn’t just mean giving of your time and money. You can also be generous in your attitude toward others. Practice being happy for other people when they succeed. Always wish the best for others. This sentiment is good for relationships. The blessings you wish for others will tend to come back to you.
3. Practice detachment
Detachment is often misunderstood today as being cold, aloof, or uncaring. The best alternative word I can think of is non-clinging. Envy often begins as emotional clinging to our desires and wants. When others have what we desire, envy can run amok. Detachment allows you to put these wants in perspective. It helps you to take a step back and work through your feelings without feeling inadequate.
You have everything you need
Want to escape the irrational world of envy?
Remember that being envious of others is a choice.
Remember that you can choose gratitude and generosity instead.
Remember that you have everything you need.
