Don’t Quit on Yourself

“It hurts to let go, but sometimes it hurts more to hold on.”

You’ve been here before.

You’ve lost all motivation to do the thing you were once interested in.

With each passing day your unaccomplished goals pile up on your weary shoulders. You wish for some relief from this self-imposed pain. You wish you could just drop everything.

You just yearn to just be.

But who would you be without your goals to strive for and your accomplishments to celebrate?

You’re afraid to let go. You’re afraid to quit. So you force yourself to strive, and strive, and strive. And you feel worse and worse and worse.

You try to find inspiration down internet rabbit holes that lead nowhere.

You try going for walks in nature but everything appears black and white.

You try talking to friends but they can’t relate.

Then one night while in the pit of despair, you remember to breathe. You breathe. You look up at the night sky and see the moon and the stars. You breathe again.

You finally allow yourself to relax. To be.

You breathe one more time. Life slowly returns.

You smile because you realize the truth. You can quit striving without quitting on yourself.

You can quit smoking, overeating, overworking, overthinking. You can quit jobs, friendships, and all your earthly possessions.

But you can do all this without quitting on yourself.

Let go and let God

And you’ll begin the journey back to yourself.

  • Breathing – it’s such a mindless activity that we forget to do it. We don’t realize its value in recovery (any kind of recovery). Thank you for reminding us! (I’m going to go breath now to overcome my frustration that the site won’t let me login!)

  • Thanks, Cylon.
At times, we all wind ourselves up. Thankfully, the big wide world reminds us to let go/relax/breathe and eventually unwind.
    Thank you.
