“How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.” ~ William Shakespeare
Are you afraid of the dark?
If so, then you’re probably also keenly aware of the power of light.
Even when the darkness is thick and seems formidable, just a tiny bit of light can break the darkness. The more intense the darkness, the greater the effect of the light.
In the northern hemisphere, the longest night of the year is approaching. It feels dark all the time.
But as the darkness increases, our light increases too. Our homes gradually light up with Christmas trees and holiday lights while various religious and cultural traditions celebrate light.
Our light comes in other ways too – we buy gifts for each other, show kindness to strangers, and increase our volunteering to help those in need. This is truly the season when we can hope in the goodness of the human spirit – even when our world feels dark literally, emotionally, or spiritually.
Just as a small light can dispel intense darkness, how can we dispel the darkness we see in our world – war, violence, greed, poverty?
Here are a few ideas:
- Listen
- Give
- Pay attention
- Smile
- Laugh
- Forgive
- Let go
- Touch
- Pray
- Be patient
- Embrace
- Love
Are you afraid of the dark?
Look inward into your own heart. There is nothing to be afraid of because you are light. May your light give you courage in the darkness. May it bring hope to others. May it bring peace to you and to the world.
Thank you for this reminder – this time of year can be so dark, externally… it is nice to be reminded that we have our inner light to shine for others, as well.
You’re welcome Lei 🙂 I’m always encouraged by the fact that the light starts to increase again after the winter solstice!
Thank you for being our beacon, George.
May I wish you and your community a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
Zarayna, I’m humbled and honored. A Happy Christmas and New Year to you as well 🙂
This was a great post, powerful in its simplicity.
Thank you swedisheik 🙂
Sometimes, time and a listening ear can be a small light in the darkness of others in need.
So true Helene!
